As you examine the vision statement of our church family, you will see that God is calling us up out of infancy and into maturity in our discipleship in two major ways.
Beyond Belief
Our church believes that we have been sent out into the world to fulfill the Great Commission. We have been sent out into our various jobs, families, neighborhoods, and, for some of us, different countries, to “go and make disciples.” In seeking to do this we must realize that only previously existing disciples can go make new disciples. The Holy Spirit cannot replicate through us what He has not first birthed and grown in us. You and I as “Christians” cannot pass along the lifestyle that Christ calls His disciples to if we, ourselves, are not living that life.
In the past decade so much focus has been put on “believing in God”, equating it with salvation so that “belief” has been torn from “discipleship.” This new vision statement is here to challenge us beyond a nebulous “faith in God” and into an intimate relationship where each of us joyfully follows Jesus with our mind, will, emotions and actions.
Together
Discipleship is not just about a relationship that occurs vertically between each renewed soul and God, but it is about the relationships that occur horizontally among us as humans. We are being called to be a closer community of brothers and sisters in the Lord. There is strength in moving together. By yourself you can be sure that you will continue to struggle to puncture the various limits of our own strength, effort, knowledge and experience. Yet, walking closely with one another, we can spur one another on beyond the limits of what we have experienced in our relationship with Jesus.
We will also be transformed into an irresistible community for those whom we invite in. The world is starving for real, authentic, loving relationships and community. In obediently following Jesus in this vision statement we can be sure that God will use us to draw in our friends, family and co-workers to experience the transforming community of the disciples of Jesus.
